Pre-Season Plans

First outdoor practice for the senior teams in on Tuesday 5th april at 6.30 .
we continue with senior practice on thursday 7th april at 6.30

First junior practice is on monday 11th april from 6.30-7.45 this is for all age groups from under 11 to under 15.

Senior practice continues on 12th and 14th of April.

we have pre season friendlies on Saturday 16th april At home to sandiacre,on Saturday16th April away to eastwood ,please make yourself available if at all possible.
we have a pre season friendly away to Toton Sycamores on Sunday 17th April,we will be using some of our promising junior cricketers in these games,in readiness for the new season.

Junior practice continues on 18th April,as does senior practice ,during that week.

Our first competitive game is on Easter Sunday 24th April ,when our 1sts travel to Kimberley in the cup.

There will be no junior practice on Easter Monday (25th).

First under 11 game is 29th April (friday)
First under 12 game is on 4th May
First under 13 game is the ECB national cup quarter final eliminator on 1st may
first under 15 game is 3rd may.

The 2011 Alfreton cc fixture handbook will be available from monday 11th april ,priced at £1.50,with full details of all fixtures ,contacts,match fees,etc

o Clear garage of debris and re-organise ( if required
Paint changing rooms and check lighting arrngements

I will do my best to persuade our excellent Chef Mr Pawelski to organise sustinence as he so excellently did last year.

On the final day of the season the second team enjoyed a comfortable win at Belper Meadows to clinch promotion to division 4 North. With the first team surviving a tense afternoon to maintain Premier League Status it was all clear to enjoy a good night at the club.

Details of our preseason plans are as follows:

2010 Fixtures

Handbooks are now available, these have full details of all league fixtures including the most recent amendments, the national cup (50 over) fixtures, the Cockspur cup (20/20 fixtures), all junior fixtures, the junior national cup games at under 12 and under 14 level (Collard Dawn trophy), preseason friendlies, rep.matches and other 20/20 games. Also included are details of match subs, contact details etc.etc. All of this for only £1.50 !! Fixture books will be available at all preseason functions,starting with the cricket clubs sponsorship of ATFC's game against Redditch on Saturday 3rd April. These can be purchased in the John Harrison Bar.

Handbooks will also be available at indoor and outdoor nets and at preseason friendlies.

We have 3 games arranged:-

Saturday 17th April--glapwell--home--2pm--(20/20 fixture)

Sunday 18th April --Toton sycamores --away--1pm

Please note,we have assumed all seniors and all juniors who played senior cricket last year are available ,unless noted otherwise.

If you are not available ,please contact a team captain,Keith Clarke or myself to advise (those travelling to Ireland on the 9th are excused).

Preseason Practice.

1st outdoor practice for seniors and juniors who played seniors last year is Thursday 8th April at 6.15pm.

There is an indoor net on Friday 9th April ,at ALC,8.30-9.30pm for seniors and senior juniors.

We continue with Outdoor practice on Tuesday and Thursday,13th and 15 th April, 6.15pm,seniors and senior juniors.

First junior section practice (including Kwik's )is Monday 19th April at 6.30pm (£1 subs ,this season).

Seniors and senior juniors continue on Tuesday and Thursday 20th and 22nd at 6.30.

1st league games on 24th april

Junior practice contiues on 26th and each monday,thereafter.

1st junior games on 28th April (under 12 -2 teams)

PLEASE NOTE-Almost all of this schedule is subject to weather and subject to cancellation at short notice,please keep an eye and ear out for amendments.

We may need to schedule some indoor nets at MHM at short notice.

Congratulations to Hannah Strong,Josh Fox,James Painter,Elliot Savidge and Jack Robbins who have all been selected to represent Derbyshire at their respective age groups.The 4 lads will be playing for their county sides in a representative game at Alfreton Park on Sunday 25th April.Come along and see how they get on.

2010 - The Next Step

Welcome to the Alfreton CC Blog. As the new 2010 season approaches let's hope for that Barbecue summer we keep getting promised.

2010 is likely to be a pivotal year for Alfreton Cricket Club. We have been extremely busy over the winter, not only ensuring we meet new Premiership guidelines on ground facilities but also working very hard with our Project Management Team for the new Pavilion and Clubroom development.

We are also looking to secure funding for a complete refurbishment of our artificial wicket, we can never say for certain, but we are reasonably confident we can deliver this in the early part of the season.

The main square received levelling and major re-dress at the end of last season, to the tune of around £1500 most of which was funded by the ECB. The square at Alfreton Grange Arts College was also re-dressed, but more significantly turned around!

We have recruited again through the winter, and I welcome all our new members and players. We are delighted to have the services of Matt Lineker again this season, Matt has proved to be the outstanding player in the Premiership for the last two seasons, and it is a delight to have him back with us.

Alfreton Cricket Club has a new vision and ambition, which the Committee know with your full support we can deliver.

Double Wicket Competition Sun 21st June 2009

The Double Wicket competition returns this Sunday

1pm meet

teams will be drawn Saturday night from everyone who is listed on the sheet in the pavillion.

The format is as follows for anyone not sure....
players are sorted into seeds and non-seeds, and pairs are drawn out at random. Teams then play in a 2 or 4 over (dependant on numbers) knock out tournament against other pairs, with players who dont have a game fielding.

Non players are very welcome to enter.

Even though the defending champions won't be able to make it this Sunday, a photo of the presentation all those years ago is attached - pre-veranda days !!

For those with short memories, the winners were Tim "knobbly knees"Delamore and Nigel "watch my back" Bowmer.

A different game now for Premier title holders

CHESTERFIELD captain Alex Hibbert acknowledged that opponents and supporters alike are taking a different approach to his side now that they are Beechwood Derbyshire Premier League champions. Alfreton battled out a draw against Chesterfield and, at one stage, stood a good chance of winning the game, the result following the champions' first defeat of the season the previous week. "There are no alarm bells ringing for us" said Hibbert. "Two years ago, everybody would be really happy with third in the league but now there's an expectation, a little bit more weight on our shoulders. "I enjoy that but now people ask questions when you lose one or two games; you're expected to win when you're champions. "People turn up and want to get one over on us when they see that Premier Cup in our pavilion. "But that's fair enough, it's how we approached things before."

Although frustrated not to capture the last Alfreton wicket, Hibbert was pleased with how his side fought back when Alfreton started their innings quickly. "It was frustrating but I think we'd have taken it from the position we were in at the first drinks break, when they were scoring at sixes and sevens and we had no control over the game," said Hibbert. "We knew Alfreton didn't have the depth that the top teams in the league might have. "But we bowled poorly with the new ball. We should have taken a lesson from what they did, which was just to put the ball in good areas on a really docile wicket. "It looked very nice but it played very slow and low. It's usually low here but that's as low as I've known it and it wasn't easy to get the ball away."

Alfreton captain Alex Mace went into the match with Australian Joel Wylie unable to bowl and with John Aspinal unavailable, so several players had to step up, including second team regular Ben Slater, who bowled 15 overs of spin. "I think we did the best with what we'd got," said Mace "It was Ben's first match of the season for us and he did OK. "We ran out of steam when we batted, which was disappointing, because it was a reasonable target " In the last three weeks, we've just not quite got there chasing targets. "But we've tried to instill in people that if we don't lose matches, those points we pick up will all count."

Champions frustrated but also relieved

FRUSTRATED as they were not to win, Chesterfield came away from Alfreton also slightly relieved not to have been beaten.The home side ultimately had to survive the last six overs with nine wickets down to claim a draw but, early in their innings, had suggested Chesterfield's 220-6 on a slow, low track was well within their compass.

As Beechwood Derbyshire Premier League champions, Chesterfield are going to encounter this position again and again, as previous champions have also found. Opponents are fired up first to try to beat them and, if they cannot do that, they are resolved to battle out the draw. And although spinners Simon Lacey and Brian Gladwin are going to keep things tight in the middle of an innings, it looks as if the Spireites may just lack the firepower to prise defensively-minded batsmen out.

For Alfreton, the day was a matter of getting the most from their resources, since they had the influential John Aspinall missing and Australian pace man Joel Wylie playing but unable to bowl because of a shoulder injury.Putting Chesterfield in, they had an early bonus when Jon Clarke, in a lively opening spell, knocked back Kevin Leatherday's off stump. It was soon obvious that free scoring would not be easy but Ben Slater and Alex Hibbert fashioned a solid partnership of 84 for the second wicket. Some of Hibbert's cover driving was excellent but the pair were out within an over of each other just as they began to dominate.

We had already seen the unusual sight of Alfreton's Ben Slater bowling to Chesterfield's Ben Slater – the Alfreton one is not a first-team regular – but it was Hibbert the bowler removed, bowled through a lavish attempted sweep. At the other end, batsman Ben Slater's equally ugly heave at Tom Young in the next over saw him on his way leg before wicket. What followed was a thoroughly sensible approach from Ed Crowther and Ross Whiteley, as they picked up countless singles while waiting for something Whiteley, especially, could give a more fierce whack to. Whiteley got off the mark with a straight six off Slater and added three more sixes but everything else was in ones apart from two fours, the second of which came from the last ball of the innings. It was mature stuff and Crowther, too, deserved a 50 but fell short when a stand of 102 ended with him holing out in the 45th over. Whiteley completed his own 50 in that over and while there was not much to the rest of the innings, Chesterfield were reasonably happy to have got as far beyond 200 as they had.

Alfreton were satisfied, too, and started well in response, although Graham Bush, standing in as opener, did not look too secure before being bowled by Pete Camm for 13. Jake Simpson, on the other hand, was looking confident and he and captain Alex Mace added 64 for the second wicket at a tempo which started to ring alarm bells for Chesterfield. With Mace hitting Lacey to midwicket for four and square-driving him for another boundary, Alfreton went to the first drinks break at 82-1 from 17 overs and in good shape.

However, Mace was not the first, nor the last, batsman of the day undone by the slow pace and low bounce when Lacey trapped him leg before for a stylish 30 and the impetus went from the innings at that point. Andy Gwatkin looked promising for a while but, after using his feet well to cover drive Gladwin for four, was leg before sweeping at the next ball: it is hard to recall if anyone actually completed a successful sweep shot on the day. With the spinners tightening their grip, the question now was how many wickets Alfreton might keep in hand for when Lacey's and Gladwin's spells were done.

As long as Simpson stayed, it looked promising but, after turning Gladwin nicely for four, he gave the bowler a return catch from the next ball. lt was the signal for the tide to turn significantly, as two more wickets fell quickly, Clarke nonchalantly held low down at slip by Lacey off Gladwin and Chris Watt comfortably stumped by Drage Thompson off Gladwin.

Now it was certainly a matter of survival for the home side and Tom Bentley, who has suffered a harsh introduction to the Premier League since his arrival from Nutbrook, took the opportunity to dig in and spend much-needed time in the middle. He had asked to be dropped down the order after scoring only 12 runs in eight attempts as an opener so far. However, he would have good reason to take some satisfaction from a battling 26 not out here. Wylie, who reacted grumpily to being given leg before to Ed Jones, and Young, caught by Gladwin off Luke Thomas, both recorded ducks but Alfreton's Ben Slater rarely looked in any trouble as he saw most of the strike in seeing off the last six overs. In truth, Chesterfield's seamers did not invite him to have to play the ball as often as they might and the champions may well find this a recurring problem as they watch Ockbrook & Borrowash extending their lead at the top.

Dean takes a hat-trick as Ockbrook win again

OCKBROOK & Borrowash tightened their grip on the Beechwood Derbyshire Premier League leadership with another crushing maximum points victory, this time away at Alvaston & Boulton. Four of Ockbrook's five wins have now come batting first and, again, Kevin Dean (pictured) made the difference with the ball, as he included a hat-trick in his second six-wicket haul of the season. Before that, opener Matt Lineker had hit exactly 100 as Ockbrook piled up 278-4 declared, calling a halt with two overs of their allotted 50 to go. Matt Cassar added 60 and Johnny Owen 39. They did not need anything like the two extra overs available, as Alvaston were shot out for 62 in 23.2 overs, Dean finishing with 6-30.

Sandiacre Town are currently looking like the side most likely to give chase and their opening bowlers, Ryan McFadyean and Dan Wheeldon, shared all 10 wickets between them for the second time this season. The pair had five each on the second weekend to send Alfreton tumbling to defeat and did the same to Quarndon at Longmoor Lane. It was a depressing day for the visitors as, in the end, their 50 all out from 21 overs represented something of a recovery from the depths of 21-8. Only Dale Winson, with 22 not out from 47 balls, reached double figures, while wicketkeeper Danny Green held four catches.

Runs flowed at Lullington Park, where visitors Ilkeston Rutland scored 250-8 and then saw their hosts pull off a successful chase with eight balls to spare.Dave Smit made 83 and Nick Dawson 84 in Ilkeston's innings, with spinners Mike Smith and Andy Goodwin collecting four fairly expensive wickets each.Tom Poynton top-scored with 65 in the response, Goodwin chipped in 43 and captain Jonny Shales led his team to a four-wicket win with an unbeaten 55.

Dunstall followed up their first win of the season last week at Chesterfield with another, inflicting a sixth straight defeat on bottom club Rolls-Royce and taking maximum points.Brothers Jamie and Matt Benstead put on 161 for the first wicket for the home side, Jamie falling for 62 before Matt went on to reach 101 in a total of 250-5. Royces were never in the hunt as opening bowler Craig Jennings got stuck in on his way to a haul of 6-31. Only a late blast from number nine batsman Atiq Bhatti, who hit 32, carried the visitors beyond three figures and they were all out for 101 in 34.3 overs.

Spondon were frustrated in their attempt to finish off Aston-on-Trent after racking up 250-9 at home to the strugglers. Matt Dawes hit 74 and Dave Hartley 54 for Spondon, while Mehmoon Tariq took 4-53. Tariq was also Aston's top scorer, with 30, as they battled to 173-9, Joe Ashdown taking 3-44. Aston took seven points from the game and it is already looking like returns like that could prove important in the battle at the bottom of the table, where Rolls-Royce and Quarndon are in danger of becoming adrift from the rest.

Club cricket: Underdogs' day in first Twenty20

IN A spectacular day's entertainment, Dunstall, Quarndon and Rolls-Royce put disappointing Derbyshire Premier League starts behind them to reach the last four in the county's first Twenty20 tournament yesterday. They will be joined by a more predictable name, Ockbrook & Borrowash, who went through on net run-rate after their round-robin decider against Chesterfield was rained off.

Arguably the biggest drama came at Lullington, where the hosts lost their opener by one run to Royces, then beat Sandiacre by the same narrow margin, before Royces had the better of Sandiacre in the third match.

The biggest scores of the day were at Spondon, where Aston on Trent posted a mammoth 220-7, only to see Quarndon overcome it with a ball to spare. Spondon, who had beaten Aston as well, must have fancied their chances on home turf but Matt Dowman was out one short of a century as Quarndon posted a tough 186-6. Joe Ashdown responded with 97 for Spondon but, with seven wickets down, they fell two runs short of Quarndon's total, so James Ede's side went through.

Scores were lower at Ilkeston where, again, the third match was a decider. The host team passed Alvaston & Boulton's 124-6 in only 12.2 overs with one wicket down, before Dunstall edged past A&B's 101-9 with a ball to spare. But Dunstall then bowled Ilkeston out for 102 in only 17.1 overs, Tom Clarke taking four wickets, and marched through by eight wickets in 18.1 overs, with Matt Gouldstone unbeaten on 59.

Club cricket: Player awards

IN-FORM bowlers Simon Lillie (Spondon) and Tom Young (Alfreton) have jumped to the top of the Premier League Player of the Year standings with seven points each after winning man of the match awards on Saturday.

In the County League Player of the Week awards, the batting prize goes to David Buckley of Marehay seconds, who hit 124 in his side's Division 4N draw at home to Holmewood, while the bowling prize was won by Ticknall bowler Eddie Ikin, whose 7-20 skittled Alvaston & Boulton for 109 in Division 4S.

Club cricket: Bowlers on top and Dean best of all as Ockbrook win again

WITH wickets still fresh from the week's wet weather, bowlers had much the better of Saturday's Beecwhood Derbyshire Premier League matches.

Only two sides topped 200 and Ockbrook & Borrowash's 200-9 at home to Lullington Park was enough to see them extend their early lead in the table to 18 points.

Matt Lineker made 54 and Matt Cassar 47 as Ockbrook battled to what would prove a formidable total for Lullington, for whom spinner Paul Dawson did his best to keep the score down with 5-49. In reply, Lullington had no answer to former Derbyshire seamer Kevin Dean as they collapsed to 118 all out. Andy Goodwin battled to 47 for the visitors but Dean took 6-25 and, undoubtedly, it will not be the last game he wins for Ockbrook this season.

They have familiar pursuers in second place after Sandiacre Town also picked up maximum points, collecting the day's highest score, 229-8, against Aston-on-Trent.

Dan Birch finished 55 not out, with 48 from Anthony Woolley and thirties for James Chapman and John Trueman.

The Sandiacre bowlers were soon able to exploit Aston's tendency to collapse, with Chapman the main beneficiary, as he finished with a remarkable 5-2. John Jordison also took 3-17 and the innings was wrapped up for 76 – one more than the previous week's total – in 24.3 overs.

Alfreton fell three runs short of beating Ilkeston Rutland in a cracking game at the Rutland Sports Park, Ilkeston claiming the winning draw.

Carl Pengelly top-scored with 45 for Ilkeston as they made 166-8, Jon Clarke and Tom Young collecting three wickets each.

Alfreton's reply also ended with eight wickets down, but on 164, with John Aspinall and Andy Gwatkin chipping in 33 each.

There was an extraordinary game of ups and downs at The Common, where home side Quarndon eventually emerged with a winning draw against Alvaston & Boulton.

Quarndon began with a careful stand of 56 between Robin Williamson and Matt Dowman but, when Dowman went for 30, there were three ducks among the next five batsmen to go as they failed to cope with Daryll Walker's spin. When Williamson was seventh out, for an 86-ball 28, they were in deep trouble at 93-7 and Walker's spell ended at 5-11 from his 15 overs. However, some sort of salvation came from the unlikely bat of Michael Staves, who managed 34 from 61 balls as 54 runs were added for the loss of two more wickets before the end of the 50 overs. It soon became apparent that Quarndon's 148-9 would be a defendable total in the conditions, as Wahh ran out Ahsan Tariq and Dowman took the next three A&B wickets, including that of Steve Stubbings, to put them in trouble at 40-5.

Eventually, with captain Steve Ottewell in almost to the end for 20, A&B clung on at 94-9, Dowman taking 4-25.

Champions Chesterfield were undone by the conditions at Queen's Park as Dunstall perhaps chose a surprising time and place to land their first win of the season.

The visitors held nine catches as they bowled Chesterfield out for 99, Tom Mandleberg taking the important early wickets of Kevin Leatherday and Alex Hibbert.

With Derbyshire's Gary Park chipping in a spell of 3-19 from seven overs, the Chesterfield innings never recovered, Andy McCarroll top-scoring with only 19 as they were hustled out in 35.4 overs. Three early wickets for Luke Thomas, who sent back James Benstead and Matt Gouldstone for ducks and had Carl Eyden caught behind for five, gave the champions a little hope. Matt Benstead and John Jennings also followed for single figures and, at 40-5, Dunstall were in danger of handing Chesterfield an unlikely 27 points. However, Park was still there and Craig Jennings (pictured left) joined him to get the total up to 76.

Park fell to Peter Camm for 38 but Jennings (30 not out) finished it from there, Scott Chilman not being required to contribute a run of the last 24 needed.

Club cricket: It's simple for Simon to lift Spondon

THE Beechwood Derbyshire Premier League's two promoted teams appear to be in an unwanted battle to prove which of them is in the most disarray after both were bowled out in the 70s on Saturday. On paper, Rolls-Royce look a little better equipped than Aston-on-Trent to handle the step up but, after their thrashing by Spondon, it is they who have lost five out of five and sit bottom of the early-season table. As Elvaston proved two seasons ago, it is possible to get through the first half of the season without a win and looking relegation certainties before scrambling to survival but it is already a long road back for Naeem Akhtar's team this time.

The day left no such concerns for Spondon, who will feel they have kickstarted their season after a first win in four attempts. They have half a new team and a new captain, in Chris Windmill, this time around but they look equipped to challenge near the top of the table again and the fielding sharpness and all-round keenness that characterised 2007's title-winning season looks like it is still in place.

They have lost two of the main planks of that season, in opening bowlers Steve Attenborough and Paul Cook, since then but, on Saturday's evidence, Gareth Young and Simon Lillie are not a bad alternative. Young was not getting enough opportunities at Ockbrook & Borrowash but you will not find many on the circuit who do not rate him a strong and effective all-rounder. Lillie grew up at Elvaston but was restricted to seven-over spells by his age and was not always getting those.

Now freed of the age restriction, he reeled off 15 overs at Rolls-Royce and, apart from an early full toss put away by Mohammed Waseem, gave their batsmen nothing at all to hit.Lillie bowls straight and a soft, slow wicket was in his favour. Arfan Fazal, a batsman who prefers to play his shots, laboured a long time for three, frequently finding fielders, before frustration got the better of him in the 11th over and he edged Lillie to second slip, where Australian signing Simon Hill took a smart catch. Zain Abbas had a careful look at the situation before leaving one from Lillie that nipped back to bowl him and, within a couple of overs more, Rolls-Royce were in real trouble. Akhtar promoted himself in the order to try to inject some stability but the ugly heave which saw him bowled by Young will not go down as one of the finer moments of his distinguished time in the Premier League. An over later, Mohammed Waseem's carefully compiled 18 was over when he swung across the line at Lillie and Royces were 34-4. With the order having been switched around, there were still two capable batsmen at the crease in Raja Sohail Haider and Muhammad Sultan. The latter aimed to hit his way out of trouble, lifting both Young and Lillie for leg-side fours, but Sohail holed out to leave his team at 51-5 at halfway.

That became 58-6 when Waseem Mohammed, who looks a shadow of the teenager who hit centuries opening for Alvaston & Boulton a few seasons back, missed one from Windmill. Royces were already feeling sorry for themselves and Sultan was thoroughly unhappy to be given out when he was sent back by Faisal Khan looking for a run to mid off and beaten back by Sam Kellogg's throw to keeper Dave Hartley. The batsman's long wait before leaving the field was to earn him, predictably enough, a minor offence warning after the game.

Joe Ashdown came on to mop things up, bowling Nasir Khalid and finishing with two in two balls as Khan, freshly arrived from Aston, unwisely gave him the charge and was stumped before Amir Iqbal was bowled first ball. Lillie (pictured) ended his fine spell, 4-23 from 15 overs with seven maidens, Ashdown's 3-10 largely a gift, while Young's 1-24 from 11 overs was a certainly a better effort than the figures suggest. Even with Akhtar's mean seam bowling to negotiate, there was never likely to be much chance of Spondon getting themselves in trouble with the bat. Sam Kellogg inflicted a rare embarrassment on Akhtar with a pulled six in the first over, before hitting a perfectly-timed shot through midwicket for four in the second over.

He left one from Akhtar and was bowled in the over after that but it was to be the only real glimmer for Rolls-Royce and they did themselves no favours as the game slipped away by raising the verbal levels out in the middle and entering into some ridiculous prolonged appealing.

Umpires John Clarke and Niven Roper have seen it all before, of course, and a consultation with Akhtar seemed to calm things down a little after Chris McIlroy, had felt sufficiently peeved to walk away from the crease for a good while at one point. That apart, the remainder of the innings allowed Hill the chance to acquaint himself with English conditions without too much pressure and the Australian played some good-looking shots in gathering a useful unbeaten 28. McIlroy edged Sultan with the job almost done before Hill's emphatic pull for four off the same bowler ended an unequal contest.

It would still not be a surprise to see Royces get off the bottom of the table later in the season but they will need more discipline both with their batting and in the field if it is to happen.

The result from the umpires was three minor offence warnings altogether: one for wicketkeeper Waseem Mohammed for challenging a decision, one for Sultan and one for Akhtar for failing to control his players.

He deserves better from them.

No joy for Akhtar on return to Sandiacre

SANDIACRE Town were the only other Beechwood Derbyshire Premier League team to properly beat the weather on Saturday, as they collected a 27-point maximum at home to Rolls-Royce. That made it a gloomy return to the club where he enjoyed six successful seasons for Royces captain Naeem Akhtar. Victory looked a long way off early in the Sandiacre innings, with half the side back in the pavilion for 50, but, with David Jordison eking out a valuable 32 to top score for the second successive week, they made it to 165-9. Royces then slid into trouble in their reply, opening bowler Ryan McFadyean taking three wickets.Spinner Ian Parkin mopped things up at the end, taking 5-9 as the visitors were shot out for 94 in 35.5 overs.

Rain caused all the other Premier League games to finish as abandoned – they become timed matches if more than half an hour's scheduled play is lost, meaning that the points for a drawn game do not come into play unless both sides have bowled 50 overs. In these games, unless one team wins outright, both sides take five points in addition to any bonus points they have taken for runs and wickets.

Ockbrook & Borrowash's winning streak to start the season came to an end but they were able to take maximum batting points, hitting 241-5 against Ilkeston Rutland, with Matt Cassar scoring 95, Johnny Owen 51 and Trevor Smith 46. lkeston were never going to get close to that in the time the rain allowed and closed on 141-5 to take nine points from the game after 41 overs.

Champions Chesterfield were frustrated in a run chase at Spondon after bowling their opponents out for 188 in 48.5 overs, Brian Gladwin taking 3-28. At 129-4 from 29.3 overs and with captain Alex Hibbert on 46 not out, Chesterfield would have fancied their chances of getting the runs but they had to settle for 11 points to Spondon's 10 when the final rain of the day fell.

Matt Dowman held Quarndon's batting together with 102 out of their 186-5 at Lullington Park, Derbyshire's Graham Wagg weighing in with 40. However, Lullington's reply did not get any further than 30-0 from eight overs.

Carl Eyden was the mainstay of Dunstall's innings at home to Alfreton, hitting 83 of their 167-8. Another potentially interesting finish was stalled by the weather, with Alfreton having reached 74-3 in 19.1 overs. Both sides took eight points from the game.

Aston pay the price for reckless display

RECKLESS batting by Aston-on-Trent handed Alvaston & Boulton a 27-point maximum they could not have expected in the Beechwood Derbyshire Premier League on Saturday. As Aston's batting line-up disappeared for 75 in 23 overs, there was ammunition aplenty for the critics who have suggested they will lack the discipline for a successful Premier League campaign.

It was apparently present the week before, when they batted out a draw at Lullington Park, but here a succession of batsmen kept swinging away long after the chance of victory had gone. They had earlier helped Alvaston along by dropping a string of catches as well but, even so, four separate breaks for rain had so decimated the contest that survival should not have been a problem.

Instead, Alvaston captain Steve Ottewell gratefully accepted his second five-wicket haul in successive weeks to give his side a second win on the bounce. In fairness, it was always a difficult day for batting on a slow track and the chance for victory was set up by the only two innings of substance, from Steve Stubbings and Yasser Tariq. Stubbings looks like a good signing for Alvaston, since he is not likely to be playing in Derbyshire's one-dayers and may not automatically return to the four-day side. He also has a reputation for honest commitment to a succession of club sides and he set about anchoring Alvaston's innings with discipline and purpose.

A four to square leg got him going in Mazzher Qayyum's first over and a square-driven four off Atif Sheikh's first was equally authoritative. He had an escape in the ninth over, wicketkeeper Haq Nawaz dropping him diving to his left off Qayyum, although the bowler's frustration was eased by seeing Ahsan Tariq edge the next ball to slip, where Rehan Iqbal held on to the catch. Sujith Janaka, one of Alvaston's new signings this season, looked solid for a while before another edge off Qayyum and another catch by Iqbal saw him off for 16 but Stubbings and Yasser Tariq then embarked on a patient and ultimately crucial stand of 68. They only got going, however, after Iqbal dropped his chance of a third catch, giving Stubbings a second life and splitting the webbing on his right hand nastily in the process. There were few fireworks from the batsmen but they pushed the singles around constantly, either side of a second rain break which ensured it would be a timed match. Stubbings escaped again, dropped at deep mid-off by Mohammed Azad, and could not get his reverse sweep working before his knock ended on 74 in the 39th over, playing on to Mohammed Khan.

At 151-3 in the 40th over, Alvaston should still have been looking well beyond 200 but, instead, Mohammed and Faisal Khan's spin reined them in. Mohammed Khan, especially, kept the batsmen guessing with a big variety of flight and pace and added a second wicket when he had Gemaal Hussain leg before. Dave Tittershill, run out going for a second on a misfield, Dave Lewis, bowled heaving at Faisal Khan, and Ottewell, caught in the covers, were all out trying to raise the tempo, while Yasser Tariq's patient knock ended short of a 50 when he heaved Faisal Khan to deep mid-off, Azad holding on this time. Adris Azam raised the 200 with a six off the final ball of the innings but it looked an achievable target.

In the event, Alvaston need not have worried. Omar Yussean began belligerently but Aazad edged Yasser Tariq before another rain break disturbed the early momentum at 20-1. With another half an hour lost, it appeared Aston may have only something around 35 overs to chase the runs. Mubashar Hussain hit Gemaal Hussain's first ball after the resumption sumptuously for four but was bowled by the third.

Then came the key to the game in two eventful overs, the 14th and 15th. In the first of those, Yussean drove Tariq low to cover, where Daryll Walker claimed what would have been a very good low catch. The batsman began to leave, before his partner, Nawaz, apparently suggested it might not have carried and the umpires, conferring, could not be sure. The scorebook therefore says it was not a catch but there was no disguising the ill-feeling the incident caused and Ottewell struck twice in two balls in the next over, sending back Nawaz and the potentially dangerous Sheikh, both leg before wicket. That was 39-4 and it promptly rained again, eating into the last hour of the contest. An Aston win was now out of the question but they did not bat as if that was the case.

Qayyum gave Ottewell a tame return catch, before it was Tariq's turn to win two leg before appeals, sending back Yussean and Faisal Khan. Rafaqat Ali was smartly taken low down at second slip by Janaka and, with more dark rain clouds threatening, Abdul Rehman and Mohammed Khan, remarkably, swiped away merrily. Khan lifted Ottewell over midwicket for six but was bowled as if trying to send his next attempt even further. It could hardly have been more thoughtless batting, especially as it required the unfortunate Iqbal, who would otherwise have opened the batting, to risk his injured hand in pursuit of survival. Instead, he was quickly leg before to Ottewell to complete Aston's defeat and the folly of some of the earlier batting was emphasised by the fact that the next rain swept in so quickly and so hard that it was unlikely even one more over would have been completed

Chesterfield edge a thriller with Sandiacre to stay near leaders

BEECHWOOD Derbyshire Premier League champions Chesterfield flirted with an embarrassing defeat at home to Sandiacre Town before edging to a two-wicket win with three balls to spare.

The Queen's Park side got the hard work out of the way by stifling Sandiacre's batting and bowling them out for 168, with Brian Gladwin taking 4-35 and David Jordison providing the main resistance with 63. They then looked in control in reply, with Ben Slater batting well, passing 50 with only one wicket down, before starting to wobble. At 109-7, they needed 60 from 16 overs, with Slater gone for 41. Then Drage Thompson and Ed Jones pulled things round with a useful eighth-wicket partnership and they finally recorded the win after Jones was out for 34.

Alfreton bounced back from the disappointment of being shot out for 65 at Sandiacre the previous week to take maximum points against Spondon. The result was rough on Spondon bowler Simon Lillie, who included a hat-trick in his 6-22 as Alfreton were bowled out for 190, John Aspinall top-scoring with 65. But Alfreton spinner Tom Young grabbed his second five-wicket haul of the season, 5-36, as Spondon fell 17 short of the target.

Veteran captain Steve Ottewell grabbed a five-wicket haul as Alvaston & Boulton recorded their first win of the season at Rolls-Royce.With Yasser Tariq taking 3-47, Royces were bowled out for 121, despite their captain, Naeem Akhtar, hitting 51. A&B lost seven wickets in getting past the modest target, Ahsan Tariq leading them home with an unbeaten 42.

South African import Mike Smith followed up last week's match-winning debut knock for Lullington Park with another 51 but his captain, Jonny Shales, eclipsed that with a hard-hit 80 not out as Lullington reached 220-8 at Aston on Trent. Aston proved that hanging on for a draw is not beyond them as they secured 11 points, finishing on 195-8.

It was even closer between Dunstall and Ilkeston Rutland, after Dunstall had been bowled out in the last over of their innings for 186. Ilkeston did not find runs much easier to come by and closed seven runs short of Dunstall's score with one wicket standing, so they took 12 points to Dunstall's 15.

OCKBROOK & Borrowash are off to a flyer in the Beechwood Derbyshire Premier League, having claimed maximum points from both of their opening matches. The promoted pair, Rolls-Royce and Aston, have been their victims – a harsh introduction to the top flight for both of them. While Royces were seen off by 120 runs last week, the gap was bigger on Saturday as Aston were bowled out 143 short of Ockbrook's 251-8. Matt Cassar hit 85 and Charlie Ault 57, with Matt Lineker adding 40 in Ockbrook's total. It is early days, of course, but the evidence of the opening two games is that Ockbrook's problem last season – bowling out sides determined to hang on for a draw against them – might have eased with the addition of former Derbyshire left-arm seamer Kevin Dean. Dean has taken 3-30 in both matches so far. Just when it looked as if Aston might battle it out for a draw on Saturday, their last three wickets fell in three balls, Dean snaring top scorer Atif Sheikh for 36 and captain Neil Smith (4-20) grabbing the last two with the next two balls.

Champions Chesterfield did not come close to bowling Lullington Park out for a win last week but they were much more frustrated on Saturday, as Alvaston & Boulton's last pair survived 17 overs to scramble a draw at Raynesway. Chesterfield had posted a useful 236-8, with captain Alex Hibbert run out for 93 from the last ball of the innings, before A&B slumped to 63-6. But Yasser Tariq held firm with 40 not out from 122 balls and last man Darryl Walker survived 53 balls for a vital three not out as the home side hung on.

Lullington Park welcomed their new South African signing, Mike Smith, off the plane on Saturday morning and he immediately led them to victory over Rolls-Royce with 89 not out. It was not a great day for batsmen, with Muhammad Sultan's 27 the top score for Royces in their 159-7. Lullington then slipped to 9-3 and lost eight wickets in scrambling past the target. Smith's vital innings – the next best score was 16 from Andy Goodwin – occupied 111 balls and he hit 12 fours and a six.

With half-centuries for Simon Hill, Matt Dawes and Chris McIlroy, Spondon made 281-8 in their first match of the season at home to Dunstall.The visitors might have been in trouble when James Benstead's dismissal had them at 40-4 but brothers John (79 not out) and Craig Jennings (56) put on 104 for the fifth wicket and they earned a solid draw in relative comfort on 209-6.

It was also a first game of the season for Ilkeston Rutland, whose ground was used for a St George's Day parade the previous week, and they earned a winning draw at Quarndon after a dreadful start which saw openers Dave Smit and Andy Flindall out for ducks. Andy Hislop's late assault, 69 not out from 57 balls, got them up to 238-9 before Quarndon replied with 216-8, new signing Rhodri Evans seeing them safely through to the draw with 61 not out. Ian Banks took four wickets and Smit three.

One to forget as Alfreton are sent tumbling

ALFRETON endured a day to forget as they followed last week's opening day victory with a humiliating defeat at Sandiacre Town in the Beechwood Derbyshire Premier League. They will never know whether the game would have had a significantly different outcome if they had won the toss and had the first bowl on a green-ish track. But, having lost the toss, they ran into Sandiacre's opening bowlers, Ryan McFadyean and Dan Wheeldon, on an inspired day. It is perceived at Sandiacre that the pair might just as easily give the opposition a start of 60-0 in 10 overs as rip into the batting to the tune of 27-5 – as happened on Saturday – but perhaps the same can be said of most opening bowlers.

Quite simply, the innings began awfully for Alfreton and did not get much better. McFadyean began by conceding only a wide from his first over but Wheeldon looked sharp and was moving the ball right through his first over before ripping the last ball of it past Harveer Gandam's prod to bowl him. Tom Bentley's start to Premier League life after moving up from Nutbrook stands at two ducks so far after he edged McFadyean in the next over, James Chapman taking a good low catch at slip. Alex Mace turned Wheeldon off his legs for four to square leg to get the runs back ahead of the wickets but edged the next ball to keeper Danny Green and that was 5-3. John Aspinall and Andy Gwatkin briefly steadied the ship, Aspinall surviving what Sandiacre believed was an edge behind and the chuntering that followed it, but Gwatkin followed a nicely-timed boundary off Wheeldon by picking out Ian Parkin at point from the next ball and the procession was back on. Graham Bush, caught behind off Wheeldon, Chris Watt, bowled by a good one from McFadyean, Callum Toft, hit on the back leg in front by Wheeldon, and Australian Joel Wylie, also bowled by McFadyean, came and went in quick succession and that was 38-8. Compared to those statistics, a stand of 27 between Aspinall and Tom Young was riches indeed, Young showing a determination to stick around before he drilled a half-volley straight to Rob Attwood at cover. Adam Priestley soon fended a short ball from McFadyean to short leg, McFadyean joining Wheeldon with five wickets, and an early journey home was assured for Alfreton.

Although Wylie bowled with some pace, Toft, dropping short, was pulled for two fours and taken off after two overs. Gandam had Chapman dropped at slip but that was the only semblance of an alarm as new arrival Olly Clayson, who is teaching at Trent College and has Minor Counties experience with Bedfordshire, demonstrated that he could be a very useful addition to Sandiacre's batting line-up. He and Chapman saw off the target in 12 overs and Sandiacre are unlikely to enjoy a more straightforward afternoon this season.

The clubs new clothing web-site has now been set up, and is ready to accept orders.

In the past we have ordered the clothing from a manufacturer/distributor direct, handed it out ourselves and collected payments accordingly, this hasn't proved to be as efficient as we would have hoped and our supply chain from the manufacturer was a little hit and miss.

We now have our own clothing web site which stocks most of the standard items of clothing we have used previously.

The web site is www.pro4sport.co.uk/alfretoncc enter the cricket section, click on your schools or clubs teamwear, then onto 'clubs' then onto ALFRETON CC.

There is a variety of standard items of clothing to choose from, and the method of ordering is similar to any web based shopping site.

We have chosen 'Surridge' as our clothing manufacturer, as they have come recommended.

It is possible to have your initials on the item of clothing, as previous, add it to your 'special requests' box when ordering. It is also possible to state any other special request at the same time.

You can order any item of cricket equipment at the same time from the main cricket site.

Delivery is £3.99 for 1 item or for 10 items, so do all your shopping at once, or even combine your order with a friend or relative to keep delivery costs per item to a minimum.

Derbyshire Premier League ins and outs

CHESTERFIELD

The champions have recruited opening batsman Kevin Leatherday, who proved he could hack it in the Premier League last season, from Ilkeston Rutland and talented all-rounder Luke Thomas from Swarkestone. Tall fast bowler Ed Jones, on a scholarship with Derbyshire, will bolster the seam attack, which should be boosted by the return to fitness of Paul Goodwin and Michael Deane, who both missed much of the title-winning campaign.

OCKBROOK & BORROWASH

They were stung by having the title nicked from under their noses on a wet final weekend after having led by 50 points and the bowling should be more penetrative for the addition of retired Derbyshire left-armer Kevin Dean and Steve Attenborough, who left Spondon in the middle of last season. Wicketkeeper batsman Jonny Guthrie arrives from Swarkestone. Chris Dunn, Gareth Young and Ben McGonigal have left.

SANDIACRE TOWN

The big signing of the winter was all-rounder Anthony Woolley's departure from Alvaston & Boulton to join Sandiacre, where John Trueman is the league's longest-serving captain. Young quick bowler Dan Wheeldon has come in from Elvaston to support Ryan McFadyean, who is now qualified as English. But they have missed out on Tasmanian wicketkeeper-batsman Brady Jones and will do without an overseas man.

SPONDON

Sam Kellogg hands over the captaincy to Chris Windmill and the first team will see plenty of change. All-rounder Ben Ashdown's university commitments will keep him away, while stalwart seamer Paul Cook's job has taken him to America.In come all-rounder Gareth Young from Ockbrook, seamer Simon Lillie from Elvaston, all-rounder Matt Dawes from Leicestershire side Water Orton and opening bat Chris McIlroy from Alvaston & Boulton. Their overseas player is 25-year-old Australian batsman Simon Hill.

ILKESTON RUTLAND

Dave Smit starts his fifth year as captain looking for a new partner at the top of the order with Kevin Leatherday's departure to Chesterfield. More surprising is that George Moulds has moved on, to Matlock, while Wayne White, now with Leicestershire, is unlikely to be involved. Their overseas player will be Hong Kong international all-rounder Shakwat Ali.

LULLINGTON PARK

Few changes at this stable club, where captain Jonny Shales hopes another year's experience of the Premier League will stand many of the young players in good stead. They expect to see more of Tom Poynton and he could be asked to open the batting as well as keep wicket. South African batsman Michael Smith is due when the paperwork is sorted.

ALVASTON & BOULTON

The loss of Anthony Woolley and Chris McIlroy are big blows for A&B, where Steve Ottewell continues as captain. Ahsan Tariq, brother of existing player Yasser, comes in to fill one of the opening batting slots and they have signed opening bowler and middle order bat Jamaal Hussein from Old Hill.

QUARNDON

No overseas player for them this season but Derbyshire's Paul Borrington has signed from Ticknall and could well be available quite often. James Ede is captain from the start this year and they have added Sam Van Daesdonk from Barton under Needwood and two from Loughborough University, Rodri Evans and Henry Jones. Graeme Wagg is also registered and will probably manage a few games if humanly possible.

ALFRETON

They surprised people by coping with Matt Lineker's departure last year and have a bright young captain in Alex Mace. Tall 21-year-old Australian pace bowler Joel Wylie is coming over, breaking a run of six seasons in which they have recruited from Pakistan, while opening bat Tom Bentley arrives from Nutbrook.

DUNSTALL

Martin Clewley continues as captain and they will go without an overseas player. Three young recruits are coming from Craig and John Jennings' former club Armitage, seamers Ben Watkiss and Darren Clews and all-rounder Andy Malkin, while experienced seamer Steve Scrimshaw returns to the club from Rolleston.

ROLLS-ROYCE

Veteran seamer Naeem Akhtar returns to the Premier League with his largely young charges, having led Rolls-Royce to the Division One title.They should get runs from overseas recruit Naved Ashraf, who has opened the batting in two Tests for Pakistan. He also bowls seam.Two other arrivals are Nasir Khalid from Burnage (Cheshire) and Atiq Bhatti, returning from A&B, but batsman Muhammad Alvi may not be available.

ASTON ON TRENT

A tough winter for the other promoted team, as the withdrawal of a sponsor means they could not afford top all-rounder Shahid Khan this time. He has gone to Ticknall. Last year's overseas player, Zahid Mansoor, does not have the coaching qualification to return and this year's, Shahid Mahmood, awaits his visa clearance.Teenage left-arm paceman Atif Sheikh, on Derbyshire's books, will play, as will former county academy player Mazar Qayyum, from Barton.

Alfreton Sign Australian Bowler

Alfreton Cricket Club is delighted to announce the signing of Joel Wylie from Australia. Joel is a 21 year old pace bowler from Frankston, Victoria, and has just completed his second season playing for Frankston in the Victoria Premier Cricket competition.

He is regarded as one of the outstanding, up and coming quick bowlers in Victoria. He achieved representative honours, being selected for the Victoria U-19 X1 in the National State Championships in 2005/06. This signing breaks the clubs run of 6 consecutive seasons having a Pakistani overseas, nevertheless captain Alex Mace is pleased with the signing ‘Joel is an exciting cricketer…he is a genuinely fast bowler who is tall and swings the ball at pace’.

Joel is due to arrive in the country this week, in preparation for the new season. Joel will be locally based during the week and the club is hopeful this will help Joel not only settle to the area but allow him to play a greater role within the club, coaching and passing on his knowledge to the younger players. Joel has the UK level 2 cricket coaching certificate (a league requirement), so as well as coaching Alfreton CC junior’s, he will be coaching at Mortimer Wilson school where the club have established a strong link. The club would like to wish Joel all the very best for the coming season both on and off the pitch.

Opening Batsman

Alfreton CC is also delighted to welcome opening batsman Tom Bentley (22) from Nutbrook. Tom is a talented opening batsman with a proven record playing in Division one, he is a solid opener, a stroke player with a calm temperament and will not give his wicket away. Captain Alex Mace is buoyed by the potential the club has acquired, ‘By the signings of two young players with a very good track record, the best is no doubt yet to come’.

Both, Tom and Joel will go straight into the team for the opening game against A&B at Alfreton Park this coming Saturday. Alex Mace is optimistic for the season, ‘Following on from our three previous successful season in the Premier league we aim to build on that success and consolidate our position as a Premier club. Realistically a mid-table finish would be an achievement given the strength of the Premier league, but we all know a top 6 finish is by no means out of our reach’. Alex, in his first full season as 1st XI captain, is looking to a number of the current squad to improve and contribute further to the overall team ethic, ‘We need to push on this year and turn the potential in our young squad into runs and wickets more than we have done. Above all else we hope to make progress on last year’s position’.

Autumn Newsletter

Most of the plans for the pre-season are in place, and we will soon be ready to start preparing for the 2009 season. Details of events are as follows:

Saturday 15^th November – Alfreton Cricket Club are sponsoring Alfreton Town F.C.’s home game against Redditch in the Blue Square Conference North. Alfreton’s chairman is the cricket club’s major sponsor through his Impact marketing company, and our sponsorship is really just a thank you to the chairman of the football club. For just £20 per person,. we get free entry into the game, drinks prior to the game, at half time and after the game together with snacks/sandwiches/soup etc.. All of the hospitality takes place in a private lounge. As well as helping the local club it represents excellent value. If you wish to come along contact Jon Hughes on 01773 830080. You could also get your ticket for the Scunthorpe game at the same time.

Thursday 20^th November – the AGM of the cricket club takes place at 7.30pm at the pavilion. The annual affairs of the club are discussed at this meeting, and should you have any items you may wish to discuss, Chris and the committee will be pleased to cover under any other business.

Monday Night Football – Continues for all ages at Alfreton Leisure Centre. We are on 7pm – 8pm on the 17^th November but 8-9pm on 24^th November. December times to follow. If you fancy a game just come along.

Pre-season fitness training – Starts on Thursday 8^th January 2009, at Frederick Gent School, South Normanton 9pm – 10pm. As we have said many times before, this is not a superstars competition or gladiators, it is just an opportunity for all ages, shapes and sizes to improve their own conditioning and fitness, in preparation for the 2009 season (non-cricketers are very welcome). Please come along, you know it makes sense!

Winter nets –

Are at Alfreton leisure centre,starting 1^st February,on Sundays ,6-7pm for juniors/kwiks-we have 2 nets plus the remainder of the hall for this 1^st hour,so that the kwik cricketers can practice in the hall (it is much bigger than Lea green).

7-9pm for seniors with 3rds and 4^th teamers on 1^st ,followed by 1^st and 2nds.

Fixture amendments

We have had to switch a number of games,due to various reasons,see the e-mail attached/to follow.The date for the 1^st team cup game at Chesterfield is still in doubt as the league are not happy with the revised date proposed by Chesterfield.

Please make a note of these changes and bear these in mind when planning your social calendar.The club makes a commitment to the players by providing pitches,facilities,umpires,teas,balls,scorers etc for 21 weekends.What we need in return is a commitment from the players to make themselves available for as many of those 21 weekends as possible.It is very difficult to plan anything when we never know who is available from one week to another.

Our first social event of 2009 is on Friday 6/2/09 when the legendary DANNY WILDE is playing at A.T.F.C supporters club.This event is already being talked about all around Derbyshire as the night not to miss!

Derbyshire Premier League Review 2008

South Africa is an increasingly popular source for Beechwood Derbyshire Premier League clubs looking to recruit an overseas player - no fewer than seven of the 12 clubs are employing a cricketer from that country.

Reliability and availability are probably the two key factors. Here is our run-down of the comings and goings at each of the clubs during the winter, in the order in which they finished last season.

SPONDON

No need to change too much for the youthful, largely home-grown champions, who have recruited South African batsman Warren Smith (21) to replace the prolific run-scoring of Colin Ingram. Smith may well offer a greater threat as a bowler, too. Former Derbyshire seamer Neil Gunter, who still lives locally, signs to open the bowling, while all-rounder Darren Yeomans has returned to Rolleston.

OCKBROOK and BORROWASH

Smarting from losing the Premier League title they had won two years running, Ockbrook have made the big signing of the winter in persuading Alfreton captain Matt Lineker to join them after he had spent several seasons turning down clubs' offers. Also joining are batters Ben McGonigal, from Belper Meadows, and Charlie Ault from Elvaston. Matt Cassar hands over the captaincy to the hugely enthusiastic Neil Smith, whose biggest job could be keeping everyone happy in a line-up that is the strongest on paper.

SANDIACRE TOWN

They misfired for much of last season, with regular availability an issue, but there have not been many changes. Opening bat James Chapman joins from relegated Denby, while seasoned seamer Kevin Newbold moves from Quarndon. Evergreen captain John Trueman's (pictured) runs will again be critical, while he will hope South African opening bowler Ryan McFadyean is able to take more wickets in his second season.

QUARNDON

Robin Williamson could be very satisfied with the progress of his youthful charges last season and they have added 21-year-old batsman James Blackwell, the former England junior hockey international, to the mix. Billy Bagshawe will not be playing this season, a big loss, but Matt Dowman is still on board. He, Williamson and South African all-rounder Ben De Vos will be the only players over 30 - unless Dominic Cork, who they have registered, manages to fit a game or two in.

DUNSTALL

Spinner Martin Clewley takes over for a second spell as captain from departing wicketkeeper Stuart Eustace, while they have also lost Naeem Akhtar, who is to captain Rolls-Royce this year. Those are two big holes to fill. Western Province left-arm quick bowler Lucian Simpson (28), with 44 wickets in 12 first-class matches at an average of 15.88, looks a sound overseas pick, while John Jennings, the brother of their opening bowler Craig, joins to keep wicket. They have also added Matt Gouldstone from relegated Clifton.

ALVASTON and BOULTON

There will not be many changes at Raynesway, where veteran Steve Ottewell will continue to oversee a largely young side, hoping that another year's experience will stand them in good stead and that Anthony Woolley will, as ever, turn in enough inspirational performances to keep them going. South African bowler Bardo Fransman, at 29, is an experienced campaigner but paperwork will prevent him being available for the first weekend.

LULLINGTON PARK

Captain Jonny Shales says Lullington can no longer be regarded as a young side, as most of them have been playing together for a long time now. They are still younger than most, though. There have not been any significant arrivals or departures among the regulars, although work and university commitments will rule out vice-captain David Adams for a chunk of the season. Ahmed Amla, brother of South African Test batsman Hashim, is a quality overseas pick but they will miss him for a spell when he captains a South African emerging players tour.

CHESTERFIELD

Andrew Gait-Golding, a popular addition last year, takes over as captain, with Alex Hibbert, who has turned down at least one offer to move elsewhere, as his vice-captain. Drage Thompson is expected to keep wicket and - as always, it seems - they hope to have all-rounder Alan Gofton, who travels up from London, more available this season. With Michael Deane and Peter Camm still on board, it is again a strong Chesterfield side on paper but can they get the results to go with it this time?

ALFRETON

They avoided "second season syndrome" last year, now Alfreton have to cope with the loss of inspirational captain Matt Lineker. Jon Hughes takes the captaincy for a third time and they have an experienced opening bowler from Pakistan, Fahad Masood (26), who averages 22.21 in 75 first-class matches at home. They will again rely on some signings from the Loughborough University academy for at least part of the season, with Chris Watt and Oliver Reynolds having played before.

ELVASTON

One in, one out at Elvaston, with Charlie Ault going to Ockbrook and promising opening bowler Dan Wheeldon arriving from Sawley. Nick Briars (pictured below) takes over from Lee Archer for a second shot at the captaincy. They surprised many by recovering from a bad start to stay up last season and tended to beat sides well up the table to do it. Briars points out that, this time, they have to be better at beating the sides around them. Australian all-rounder Brett Crichton, who acquitted himself well in the Premier League last season, is back and now only a year away from qualifying as English.

TICKNALL

The Division One champions lose Rizwan Akbar, who did not have the coaching qualification needed for Premier League cricket, and have replaced him with opening bowler and hard-hitting bat Tanveer Ahmed, who was at Alfreton last season. He will fancy the short boundaries at Ticknall with a bat in his hands but may have to shorten his run-up. They may get some games out of Derbyshire draft pick Jon Clare and have added Jack Lamb, a former Repton School student, who is a spinning all-rounder.

ILKESTON RUTLAND

Dave Smit skippered Ilkeston back up at the first attempt and the core of the side remains the same as that which finished third in the Premier League the season before being relegated. "A season in Division One will hopefully have brought on some of our younger players," says Smit. They needed more depth in the batting and Kevin Leatherday arrives from Matlock to provide that, while South African signing, Jan Adendorff, will bat at four and bowl off-spin.

ALFRETON CC 2008 SIGNINGS

Alfreton Cricket Club is delighted to announce the signing of two further additions to the club. Following on from last weeks signing of overseas player Fahad Masood, Alfreton have signed William Chaloner (21) and Peter Groves (19).

William Chaloner signs from the Berkshire Home Counties Premiere League club Falkland CC. The hard hitting Right handed top/middle order batsmen, arrives at the club with a reputation of being a big hitter. He has previously played two seasons with Hampshire u19s and has made one three day appearance for Berkshire in the minor counties championship and two one dayer’s in the national knock out trophy. William is currently completing a Sport Science degree at Loughborough University and has represented the University’s 2nd XI along side Peter Groves. Peter, currently studying Economics & Accounting, signs from ECB Yorkshire Premier league side Hull & YPI CC. He is a left arm opening bowler, bowling medium/fast and has produced some solid performances for the University in his first year. He is also a capable batsman, batting in Hulls top order last season, top scoring with 69. He has also previously received an outstanding performance award in the East Yorkshire Premier league, scoring 144no and taking 2 wickets in one game.

The club is keen to sign talented young, enthusiastic players but with experience of playing at a good standard of cricket and are aware of the pressures and demands this brings. In William and Peter they hope to have achieved this "Both lads come with very good recommendations to us, and are very much looking forward to the season with ACC" Jon Hughes (club captain)

Additionally, the club welcome back off spinner Chris Watt (21). Chris made a significant contribution to the club, both on and off the field in his first season and is a great character to have around, with great enthusiasm and spirit. Oliver Reynolds (22) will also be joining us again, having spent the beginning of the 2006 season with Alfreton "Oliver was unlucky not to have taken more wickets than he did that year, and with better luck will provide solid support for our overseas opening bowler, Fahad Masood" Jon Hughes. All four players have recently returned from India were they where representing Loughborough University on a winter tour.

There are also new arrivals from within the DCCL with the signing, from Wirksworth, of experienced opening batsman David Gretorex, wicket keeper Danny Richards from disbanded Tibshelf and young seam bowler Callum Toft from Marehay. David arrives at the club with vast experience of playing in the top divisions and has a reputation of being a solid batsman, and someone capable of building an innings. Danny Richards is a capable gloveman and someone the club identified in September as a target for the 2008 season and 18 year old Callum Toft who bowls at a lively pace signs after training throughout the winter with Alfreton.

Under ECB rules players are not allowed to sign for clubs until they reach the age of 16, effectively making them ‘free agents’ up until this point. Therefore the club is also pleased to announce the official signing of several younger players. Ben Slater, son of Chairman Chris, who in his first season of bowling off breaks broke into the 2nd XI and made a valuable contribution to the promotion winning team. Wicketkeeper Jack O’Dare another member of this team, who joined from Swanwick CC halfway through last season.

ALFRETON SIGN OVERSEAS PLAYER COACH

Alfreton Cricket Club is delighted to announce the signing of overseas player Fahad Masood for the 2008 season. Fahad (26) is highly regarded as a quality fast bowler on the Pakistani first class circuit, and arrives at Alfreton with the promise of being a real handful for the Derbyshire Premier league batsman.

The Habib Bank player boasts some impressive statistics with the ball, and has also been batting up the order in recent one day matches back in Pakistan. At the end of the current Pakistan domestic season he lies in 2nd place in the national bowling rankings. Taking 43 first class wickets in 11 matches for Habib Bank, helping them reach two national finals. Recently playing in the one day trophy final series, alongside several of the current Pakistani test squad, and achieving a career best of 64 with the bat. He has a career total of 265 first class wickets and 53 one day wickets. He has represented the Pakistan National Academy against South Africa and India, taking 6 wickets in one game against South Africa. Also, although ultimately not making the final 14, Fahad was selected in a 22 man squad national side to face New Zealand in a one day series in 2003.

Previously Fahad has played in England, in Liverpool and Horsham where both clubs enjoyed league and cup success. Therefore the club believes in Fahad they are bringing in a player with real pedigree and quality both in first class and league cricket. Alfreton are hopeful he can, along with a new crop of young players who have experienced 2nd Xl county cricket, help the club to continue to improve on the pitch, in training and in the dressing room.

Fahad will be locally based during the week and the Cricket Committee are hopeful this will help Fahad not only settle to the area but allow him to play a greater role within the club, coaching and passing on his knowledge to the younger players. Indeed, one of the main reasons the Cricket Committee opted for Fahad was his experience coaching in schools. Fahad has the UK level 2 cricket coaching certificate (a league requirement), so as well as coaching Alfreton CC junior’s, he will be coaching at Mortimer Wilson school where the club have established a strong link. The club would like to wish Fahad all the very best for the coming season both on and off the pitch.

As the indoor nets at Lea Green will finish on Sunday 16th March, there will be a short break and we will have a change in venue for indoor nets before outdoor practice starts. The diary of events is as follows:

Thursday 20th March – Fitness training continues at Frederick Gent School 9-10pm

Sunday 23rd March – The annual sponsored walk takes place on Easter Sunday. We meet at 11.15am for an 11.30 start from the Red Lion at Fritchley. As it is Easter Sunday we shall combine the walk with an Easter egg hunt with eggs hidden along the route. This is one of our major fund raisers of this year and we can obtain a grant to match our own fund raising pound for pound. Please try to attend

Admission which includes free entry into a beer draw is £3.00, under 12’s are admitted free. Special General Meeting Sunday 16th March

This meeting is a very important milestone in the club's plan to achieve Clubmark status and should be attended by everyone concerned. ACC: U21 INCENTIVE AWARD & ALFRETON TOWN COUNCIL GRANT

For the second successive season Alfreton Cricket Club have finished second in the Derbyshire Premier League under 21 incentive scheme. The scheme operates were teams are allocated points for the percentage of U21 players fielded in any given Premier league game. Alfreton CC only finished second behind Alvaston & Boulton CC and were awarded £398.19. The second award in two years underlines Alfreton’s commitment to providing young players the opportunity to play and progress their cricket at the highest standard the club and local cricket can offer. Six of the U21 players who represented the 1^st XI in 2007 came through the Alfreton ranks from playing Kwik cricket in the under 11 age group. This trend is set to continue as the club has a high percentage of youth players within all of the Clubs four teams.

The recognition from the Derbyshire Premier has been endorsed further by the announcement that Alfreton Town Council would again be supporting the clubs development of youth Cricket. The Town council has granted the club approximately £1300 to be used for future youth enhancement both within the club and local community.

“We are immensely grateful to the Town Council for their continued help in developing this area of the Club’s activities, their support over a number of years has been invaluable, and the results speak for themselves” Chris Slater (Club Chairman)

The Club now run four Junior Teams and this year have, as previously announced, developed the Cricket facilities at the major school in the town Mortimer Wilson School. This monetary award will also help strengthen the formal partnership with the school, which will include the development of a School Cricket Team, and Qualified Coaching on the Curriculum, both from the Club and the Derbyshire Cricket Board.

Alfreton Cricket Club would like to thank Alfreton Town Council for their continued support of the club and cricket within the town.
